"As a school that emphasizes a Christian holistic view of education, we naturally look for ways to introduce our students to healthy lifestyles," remarks Gaylan Herr, the school's principal. The health emphasis begins with a conscious decision to keep outside play as a part of the curriculum. "We have recess two times a day, plus PE. We spend a lot of time outside," comments Sarahi, a new 7th-grader. The school has a gym, but she prefers to play outdoors. The upper grades enjoy playing ultimate Frisbee and other games on its field adjacent to Aldridge Gardens. Some of the classes have been designated as Walk Fit classrooms dedicating time for walking every day. Students also notice a difference in the cafeteria. The menu is completely vegetarian and drinks are 100% fruit juice or water. Desserts are served only once a week. Students may also bring sack lunches to accommodate special dietary needs or do a combination of the two. Safety is another area of emphasis. The school recently purchased an AED heart defibrillator and the whole staff has current CPR training. One of the staff is an ex-EMT and the registrar is a former nurse. Jorge, another 7th-grader, sums it up like this: "At Hoover Christian School you don't have to worry about getting hurt, getting bullied, or anything else. This school is very safe and healthy." Graduates are Carrie Joiner, Daniel McFall, Camille Moore, Malachi Partlow, Perrin Marbury, Salvadore Perez, Jennifer Pitts, Taylor Woodall and Vianca Williams. Principal Mark Grice was honored for his leadership. During his tenure, the school moved into its new facility and has doubled the enrollment. Misty McFall was also recognized for her nine years of service as the school's secretary."Hoover Christian School's 8th Grade Graduation was featured in the May 28, 2008 edition of Birmingham News — Honors — In 2005 we came in first place for the Southeast US Region in a New York Stock Exchange competition called "The Stock Market Game" for highschool students.
